Doing the optimistic glass half full version of the planet-life equation, the laws of physics can be used to tell us that it would be impossible to have a planet like Earth, in a solar system like ours, and NOT have life.
So Life elsewhere in the universe is very likely. Life is, in fact, commonplace.
Our galaxy has over 100 billion suns. If one in a million of these has an M class planet with life, that means there are at least 100,000 in our galaxy. Now keep in mind there are 100 million galaxies, the odds are that we are not alone.
