For Frank Bruno was becoming World Champion was his life's ambition
He had three goes at it and lost
To "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon
To Tyson in their first match
To Lennox Lewis
Apart from these men, unbeaten World Champions, Frank only had one other Loss in his career, to James "Bonecrusher" Smith, a tenth round KO
(note - Witherspoon was not Undefeated at the time Frank fought him - Tim had two professional losses at this point, to Pinklon Thomas, and to Larry Holmes)
Frank had beaten all the other men he went up against, a record of 36-4 at the time of his loss to Lennox (Lennox being his 36th fight and 4th loss)
He just could not beat those three men who stood between him and the belt
Most men would have given up but Frank's heart was so big
He went on to have three more fights and won them all
Then he got his fourth shot at the belt against Oliver McCall - went the distance, all 12 rounds - and won on decision
Frank Bruno was now World Heavyweight Champion
After this it would have been fairer on Frank if he had the chance to have some title defence fights - win a few as defending Champion
However Tyson had just come out of prison and wanted his belt back - the match was arranged and Frank lost his new belt to Tyson in their second fight, their rematch
Frank retired with a record of 40-5 and never fought again .
