  • Significance: It is the most important holiday in China and in many Asian communities worldwide, focusing on family, honouring ancestors, and ushering in good fortune.
  • Date Variance: The date is determined by the lunisolar calendar, usually the second new moon after the winter solstice.
  • Celebration Length: While the public holiday lasts 7 days in China, traditional celebrations span 15 days, concluding with the Lantern Festival.

  • Traditions:
    • Reunion Dinner: Held on New Year’s Eve, considered the most crucial family gathering.
    • Red Envelopes (Hongbao): Cash gifts given to children and elders for luck.
    • Foods: Fish (for abundance), dumplings (for wealth), and rice cakes (for success) are staples.
    • Decorations: Red lanterns, paper-cuttings, and,  red couplets are placed on doors to represent luck and prosperity.
    • Performances: Lion and dragon dances are common for driving away bad luck.
