There are some things in life that simply can't be avoided, no matter how uncomfortable they make us

and there can be rewards in stepping outside of your comfort zone.

Even when the thought of it makes us want to puke. Even when we want nothing more than to run screaming for the hills.

That's why people love to say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

But sometimes, those people don't know what the hell they're talking about.

Prepare for the worst

. But, as prepared as we might be, we usually don’t see disaster coming.

We can try to envision the worst-case scenario, to foresee catastrophe.

But, when true disaster strikes, it often comes out of nowhere. And when the worst really does happen, we find ourselves completely blindsided.

Why do bad things happen to good people?

We ask that question so often, it's become a cliché, but that's because bad things do happen to good people constantly.

You just have to hope that when it's your turn, you'll know what to do, how to cope, how to persevere.

But the truth is, you don't know how you'll react to your worst-case scenario. None of us do.

 Not until it happens.

Puzzle

Gather all available information, assess the problem, you focus your attention, and you solve the puzzle.

People are a harder puzzle.

There's never one right answer and you never have all of the information.

Most puzzles come down to one last piece of information missing. Whether it's the answer to a  mystery or to the question of who you are, where you fit, it all comes down to that last piece.

That's why the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle is so satisfying to place.

Unless of course, the piece doesn't quite fit.

That can make you wish you never opened the puzzle in the first place.

Researchers are currently working to make a map of the human brain.

It may be the most complex map ever created. Billions of neurons making trillions of connections.

At first glance, they seem completely random.

But there's nothing random about them. All these connections have to happen in a specific pattern. It is designed for a function.

These connections determine everything about us: what we love, what we hate, what we say, what we do.

We're just starting to learn the extent of the brain's connections. How far they reach, how deep they go. But we know that every connection matters. Every connection is crucial and when one is broken, it usually means some damage has been done.

This system of connections compels us to act and choose and behave.

Sometimes humanly against our own will, but it is not random at all.

It is the map of who we are.

We work to understand ourselves. Solve the puzzle.

How all the connections work, and all the pieces fit.

Patients who undergo an amputation often feel a sensation where the missing limb was as if it's still there.

The syndrome is called phantom limb.

It's as if the body can't accept that a terrible trauma has occurred. The mind is trying to make the body complete again.

Patients who experience phantom limb report many different sensations but by far the most common is pain.

The body can be stubborn when it comes to accepting change.

The mind holds out hope that the body can be whole again and the mind will always fight for hope, until it finds a way of understanding its new reality and accepts that what is gone is gone forever.

Actually, finding out that you've been looking at things all wrong can be sort of liberating.

And suddenly you see new potential, new possibilities where you'd never seen them before.

And that's all fine when a hopeless situation suddenly looks good.

Unfortunately, sometimes it goes the other way.

Even good marriages fail.

One minute you're standing on solid ground. The next minute... you're not.

And there's always two versions. Yours and theirs.

Both versions start the same way, though. Both start with two people falling in love.

Nobody gets married thinking it's gonna fail. You think yours is the one that's gonna make it.

And so it always comes as a shock. The moment when you realize, it's over. One minute you're standing on solid ground. The next minute, you're not.

Do you have what it takes?

If your marriage is in trouble, can you weather the storm?

When the ground gives way and your world collapses, maybe you just need to have faith.

And trust that you can survive this together.

Maybe you just need to hold on tight.

And no matter what, don't let go.

Hour

How much can you actually accomplish in an hour?

Run an errand maybe? Sit in traffic? Get an oil change?

When you think about it, an hour isn't very long.

60 minutes.

3,600 seconds.

That's it.

. An hour... one hour... can change everything... forever.

An hour can save your life.

An hour can change your mind.

Sometimes an hour is just a gift we give ourselves.

For some, an hour can mean almost nothing.

For others, an hour makes all the difference in the world.

But in the end, it's still just an hour. One of many. Many more to come.

60 minutes.

3,600 seconds.

That's it. And it starts all over again.

And who knows what the next hour might hold?

The human body is a highly pressurized system.

The blood pressure measures the force of blood, pulsating through the arteries. It's important to keep this pressure regulated. Low or inadequate pressure can cause weakness or failure.

It's when the pressure gets too high... that problems really occur.

If the pressure continues to increase, a closer examination is called for... Because it's the best indicator that something is going terribly wrong.

Every pressurized system needs a relief valve. There has to be a way to reduce the stress, the tension, before it becomes too much to bear. There has to be a way to find relief, because if the pressure doesn't find a way out... it'll make one. It will explode.

It's the pressure we put on ourselves... that's the hardest to bear. The pressure to be better than we are. The pressure to be better than we think we can be.

It never ever lets up.

It just builds and builds and builds.

We all want to grow up.

We're desperate to get there.

Grab all the opportunities we can to live.

We're so busy trying to get out of that nest, we don't think about the fact that it's going to be cold out there. Really freaking cold.

Because growing up sometimes means leaving people behind.

And by the time we stand on our own two feet, we're standing there alone.

Every cell in the human body regenerates on average every seven years.

Like snakes, in our own way we shed our skin.

Biologically we are brand new people. We may look the same, we probably do, the change isn't visible at least not in most of us, but we are all changed completely forever.

When we say things like "People don't change" it drives scientists crazy. Because change is literally the only constant in all of science.

Energy, matter, it's always changing. Morphing. Merging. Growing. Dying.

It's the way people try not to change that's unnatural. The way we cling to what things were instead of letting them be what they are. The way we cling to old memories instead of forming new ones. The way we insist on believing, despite every scientific indication, that anything in this lifetime is permanent.

Change is constant. How we experience change, that's up to us.

It can feel like death, or it can feel like a second chance at life.

If we open our fingers, loosen our grips, go with it, it can feel like pure adrenaline.

Like at any moment we can have another chance at life.

Like at any moment, we can be born all over again.

Dying isn't easy.

The body was designed to stay alive; thick skull, strong heart, keen senses.

Like I said dying isn’t easy. Living is better than dying... until it's not.

some of the greatest medical discoveries have happened by accident.

 Mold: Penicilin.

Poisonous tree bark: a cure for Malaria,

a little blue pill for high blood pressure, impotence be damned.

the gift of life

It can be painful, it can be terrifying but in the end it's worth it, every time.

We all have the oppertunity to give.

Maybe the gift is to try and make a simple apology.

Maybe it's to understand another person's point of view.

Maybe it’s to hold a secret for a friend.

The joy supposedly is in the giving, so when the joy is gone, when the giving starts to feel more like a burden, that’s when you stop.

But if you’re like most people I know, you give till it hurts, and then you give some more.

Peace

Peace isn’t a permanent state.

It exists in moments. Fleeting. Gone before we even knew it was there.

We can experience it at any time, in a stranger’s act of kindness, a task that requires complete focus or simply the comfort of an old routine.

Everyday we all experience these moments of peace.

The trick is to know when they’re happening so that we can embrace them, live in them.

 And finally let them go.

When one door closes, another opens

but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door
that we do not see the one which has opened for us
Live passionately,
with all the injuries that can happen as a result.

It is worth it.
Waiting is painful.

Forgetting is painful.
But not knowing which to do is the worse kind of suffering.

Compared to what you ought to be you are only half awake

You are making use of only a small part of your physical and mental resources.

The human individual lives far within his limits.

He possesses powers of various sorts which he habitually fails to use.
The man who's travelled the furthest is the most aware of the road that still lies ahead.
The fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself.

No heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams.
To gain that which is worth having,
it may be necessary to lose everything else.
You are not defeated when you lose.

You are defeated when you quit.

When life hits you hard, don't complain.

Cry out loud, swear, smash a vase, but don't complain.

You are not a victim

Stress is an ignorant state

It believes that everything is an emergency.

Nothing is that important.
Waiting is painful.
Forgetting is painful.
But not knowing which to do is the worse kind of suffering.
Live passionately,
with all the injuries that can happen as a result.

It is worth it.
Knowledge without transformation is not wisdom

It is Doubt that makes us grow

because it forces us to look fearlessly at the many answers that exist to one question
What ever you do,
dont congratulate yourself too much
or berate yourself either.

Your choices are half chance.
So are everybody elses.

When one door closes, another opens

but we often look so long and so regretfully upon the closed door
that we do not see the one which has opened for us
Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end of it.
What would life be if we had no courage to attempt anything?
Advance, and never halt, for advancing is perfection.

Advance and do not fear the thorns in the path,
for they draw only corrupt blood.

All that spirits desire, spirits attain.
It's kind of fun to do the impossible.
Failure is only the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.
Most of our obstacles would melt away if,
instead of cowering before them,
we should make up our minds to walk boldly through them
