Puck's soliloquy
If we shadows have offended,
think of this and all is mended:
that you have but slumber'd here,
while these visions did appear.
And this weak and idle theme,
no more yielding than a dream.
Gentles -- do not reprehend.
If you pardon -- we will mend.
And -- as I am an honest puck,
if we have unearned luck
now to'scape the serpents' tongue,
we will make amends, ere long.
Else the puck a liar call.
So good night unto you all.
Give me your hands if we be friends
and Robin shall restore amends.

The Theatre of the Absurd
The Theatre of the Absurd (French: Théâtre de l'Absurde) is a designation for particular plays of absurdist fiction, written by a number of primarily European playwrights in the late 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, as well as to the style of theatre which has evolved from their work. Their work expressed the belief that, in a godless universe, human existence has no meaning or purpose and therefore all communication breaks down. Logical construction and argument gives way to irrational and illogical speech and to its ultimate conclusion, silence [1]. Critic Martin Esslin coined the term "Theatre of the Absurd", relating these plays based on a broad theme of absurdity, roughly similar to the way Albert Camus uses the term. The Absurd in these plays takes the form of man’s reaction to a world apparently without meaning or man as a puppet controlled or menaced by an invisible outside force. Though the term is applied to a wide range of plays, some characteristics coincide in many of the plays: broad comedy, often similar to Vaudeville, mixed with horrific or tragic images; characters caught in hopeless situations forced to do repetitive or meaningless actions; dialogue full of clichés, wordplay, and nonsense; plots that are cyclical or absurdly expansive; either a parody or dismissal of realism and the concept of the "well-made play". Playwrights commonly associated with the Theatre of the Absurd include Samuel Beckett, Eugène Ionesco, Jean Genet, Harold Pinter, Tom Stoppard, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Fernando Arrabal, and Edward Albee.
The Wicker Man
However, according to the anthropologist James Frazer, there was a darker side to the Saturnalia festival. In Durostorum on the Danube (modern Silistra), Roman soldiers would choose a man from among them to be the Lord of Misrule for thirty days. At the end of that thirty days, his throat was cut on the altar of Saturn. Similar origins of the British Lord of Misrule, as a sacrificial king (a temporary king, as Frazer puts it) who was later put to death for the benefit of all, have also been recorded[citation needed]. If such a practice were even play-acted at Amasea, we can be sure we would have heard about it from the bishop.
On January 1, A.D. 400, Asterius, bishop of Amasea[1] in Pontus (Amasya, Turkey) preached a sermon against the Feast of Calends ("this foolish and harmful delight")[2] that tells a lot about the Lord of Misrule in Late Antiquity. The New Years feast included children arriving at each doorstep, exchanging their gifts for reward:[1][2]
"This festival teaches even the little children, artless and simple, to be greedy, and accustoms them to go from house to house and to offer novel gifts, fruits covered with silver tinsel. For these they receive, in return, gifts double their value, and thus the tender minds of the young begin to be impressed with that which is commercial and sordid."
--Asterius, in "Oratio 4: Adversus Kalendarum Festum" [2]
It contrasted with the Christian celebration held, not by chance, on the adjoining day:
"We celebrate the birth of Christ, since at this time God manifested himself in the flesh. We celebrate the Feast of Lights (Epiphany), since by the forgiveness of our sins we are led forth from the dark prison of our former life into a life of light and uprightness." --Asterius, "Oratio 4"
Significantly, for Asterius the Christian feast was explicitly an entry from darkness into light, and although no conscious solar nature could have been expressed, it is certainly the renewed light at midwinter, which was celebrated among Roman pagans, officially from the time of Aurelian, as the "festival of the birth of the Unconquered Sun". Meanwhile throughout the city of Amasea, although entry into the temples and holy places had been forbidden by the decree of Theodosius I (391), the festival of gift-giving when "all is noise and tumult" in "a rejoicing over the new year" with a kiss and the gift of a coin, went on all around, to the intense disgust and scorn of the bishop.

The Lord of Misrule
In Britain, the Lord of Misrule — known in Scotland as the Abbot of Unreason and in France as the Prince des Sots — was an officer appointed by lot at Christmas to preside over the Feast of Fools. The Lord of Misrule was generally a peasant or sub-deacon appointed to be in charge of Christmas revelries, which often included drunkenness and wild partying, in the pagan tradition of Saturnalia. The Church held a similar festival involving a Boy Bishop. The celebration of the Feast of Fools was outlawed by the Council of Basel that sat from 1431, but it survived to be put down again by the Catholic Queen Mary I in England in 1555.
While mostly known as a British holiday custom, the appointment of a Lord of Misrule comes from antiquity. In ancient Rome, from the 17th to the 23rd of December, a Lord of Misrule was appointed for the feast of Saturnalia, in the guise of the good god Saturn. During this time the ordinary rules of life were turned topsy-turvy as masters served their slaves, and the offices of state were held by slaves. The Lord of Misrule presided over all of this, and had the power to command anyone to do anything during the holiday period. This holiday seems to be the precursor to the more modern holiday, and it carried over into the Christian era.

Saturnalia
Saturnalia became one of the most popular Roman festivals. It was marked by drunken orgies, tomfoolery and reversal of social roles, in which slaves and masters ostensibly switched places, much like the Lord of Misrule in later Christian celebrations.
Saturnalia was introduced around 217 BC to raise citizen morale after a crushing military defeat at the hands of the Carthaginians.[1] Originally celebrated for a day, on December 17, its popularity saw it grow until it became a week-long extravaganza, ending on the 23rd. Efforts to shorten the celebration were unsuccessful. Augustus tried to reduce it to three days, and Caligula to five. These attempts caused uproar and massive revolts among the Roman citizens.
Saturnalia involved the conventional sacrifices, a couch (lectisternium) set out in front of the temple of Saturn and the untying of the ropes that bound the statue of Saturn during the rest of the year. A Saturnalicius princeps was elected master of ceremonies for the proceedings. Besides the public rites there were a series of holidays and customs celebrated privately. The celebrations included a school holiday, the making and giving of small presents (saturnalia et sigillaricia), massive and multiple group orgies, and a special market (sigillaria). Gambling was allowed for all, even slaves.
The toga was not worn, but rather the synthesis, i.e. colourful, informal "dinner clothes"; and the pileus (freedman's hat) was worn by everyone. Slaves were exempt from punishment, and treated their masters with (a pretense of) disrespect. The slaves celebrated a banquet: before, with, or served by the masters. Yet the reversal of the social order was mostly superficial; the banquet, for example, would often be prepared by the slaves, and they would prepare their masters' dinner as well. It was license within careful boundaries; it reversed the social order without subverting it.[2]
The customary greeting for the occasion is a "Io, Saturnalia!" — Io (pronounced "e-o") being a Latin interjection related to "ho" (as in "Ho, praise to Saturn").

Love costs - it takes effort and work.
It's easier to lose yourself in drugs than it is to cope with life.
It's easier to steal what you want than it is to earn it.
It's easier to beat a child than it is to raise it.
Apathy is an easier solution. The path of least resistance

Passion
Passion makes a person stop eating, sleeping, working, feeling at peace.
A lot of people are frightened because, when it appears, it demolishes all the old things it finds in its path.
No-one wants their life thrown into chaos.
That is why a lot of people keep that threat under control, and are somehow capable of sustaining a house or a structure that is aleady rotten.
They are the engineers of the superceded.
Other people think exactly the opposite.
They surrender themselves without a second thought, hoping to find in passion the solutions to all their problems.
They make the other person responsible for their happiness and blame them for their possible unhappiness.
They are either euphoric because something marvellous has happened or depressed because something unexpected has just ruined everything.
Keeping passion at bay or surrendering blindly to it -
which of these two attitudes is the least destructive?

Seagal appears.
Jessica Alba has a shower scene.
And Lindsay Lohan appears side topless.

You are a child of the universe

And whether or not it is clear to you,

Therefore be at peace with God,

And whatever your labors and aspirations,

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. Sing
Dont be reckless with other peoples hearts, dont put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss
Dont waste your time on jealousy; sometimes youre ahead, sometimes youre behind...the race is long, and in the end its only with yourself.
Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch
Dont feel guilty if you dont know what to do with your life...the most interesting people I know didnt know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives, some of the most interesting 40 year olds I know still dont.
Get plenty of calcium
Be kind to your knees, youll miss them when theyre gone.

Enjoy your body, use it every way you can...dont be afraid of it, or what other people think of it, its the greatest instrument youll ever own.
Dance...even if you have nowhere to do it but in your own living room.
Read the directions, even if you dont follow them.
Do NOT read beauty magazines, they will only make you feel ugly.

Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths, price will rise, politicians will philander, you too will get old, and when you do youll fantasize that when you were young prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Dont expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund, maybe you have a wealthy spouse; but you never know when either one might run out.
Dont mess too much with your hair, or by the time its 40, it will look 85.
Be careful who advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia, dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than its worth.

Dont worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing everyday that scares you
Maybe youll marry, maybe you wont, maybe youll have children, maybe you wont, maybe youll divorce at 40, maybe youll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary...what ever you do, dont congratulate yourself too much or berate yourself either - your choices are half chance, so are everybody elses.
49 second break in speech -- Quindon singing
Get to know your parents, youll never know when theyll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings; they are the best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but for the precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography in lifestyle because the older you get, the more you need the people you knew when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard; live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft.
But trust me on the sunscreen...
Doubt until you can doubt no more.
Doubt is thought and thought is life.
Systems which end doubt are devices for drugging thought.

The A Team
This turned out to be a prequel to the TV series - how they came to be the A Team, on the run as fugitives. This of course sets it up for a "sequel", a film which would be like an episode of the show, being hired to help people, which has potential.
Most likely this will end up as a one off. It's not a bad film in it's own right, but has little in common with the show, "inspired by" rather than "based on" would be more accurate.
Liam Neeson's interpretation of Hannibal is based on Lee Marvin, even down to the voice he uses. This is not a bad thing as the character is edgy and tense where Peppard's Hannibal was relaxed and cool. We have seen different interpretations of James Bond from the different actors who have played him, so know this can work. Neeson interprets Hannibal probably a lot closer to the way he would have ended up if James Coburn had gotten the part in the first place. Peppards Hannibal ended up being played the same way as he played Banacek.
Face is completely different from the show. Benedict played Face exactly the same way as he did with Starbuck, a smooth talking conman, and a bit of a wimp. Cooper's Face is all macho, the way a Special Forces officer would be. He even gets a shirt off scene.
Murdoch is the best character in the movie - a new way of interpreting the crazy pilot which doesn't detract from the Murdoch we remember and love from the show. It is a new character, not a parody.
BA is the most disapointing aspect of the whole film. The original BA was an extension of the Mr T character itself. There is no real difference between Mr T in public, always staying in charachter, as Clubber Lang in Rocky 3, and as BA in the show.
When we heard he would be played by Rampage Jackson, a UFC star and not an actor, we figured he was picked because he would have a larger than life screen presence. This turned out not to be the case. This BA is quiet and there is this ridiculous subplot where he is some kind of Ghandi disciple embracing non violence. There is no fantastic unarmed fight scene as there could have been. Also in the show he was a mechanic and Staff Sergeant. Here he been relegated to the rank of Corporal. Also, the fact that his firstname was Bosco was only referred to in the show whereas here they call him Bosco all the time.
In this film they are all Army Rangers, whereas in the show it was not really obvious were they came from, just that they were Vietnam vets.
Here Hannibal and Face start as a kind of Batman and Robin team then recruit BA and Murdoch to form the Team before somehow ending up in Iraq working on special missions for General Morrison.
Hannibal would have been a ODA Colonel and would have had at least a dozen men in his Alpha Unit. The show refers to other members of their original unit, and they attend the funeral of one who is murdered and then avenge his death.
Lynch, rather than being a Colonel who is searching for the team, is here a CIA operative. At the end of the film he is replaced by another Lynch, presumably who will go onto hunt them in the sequels.
Jessica Biel, the token girl, does not take on the Amy role but ends up on the team looking for The A Team.
Worst aspect is Hannibal losing it right when the pressure gets worse and letting Face take over and plan the last mission. Early on we see Hannibal mentoring Face and showing him how to do plans, and it would have been OK to see him mentor Face through his first operation. But it shouldn't have happened because Hannibal lost it and needed Face to jump in.
And worse off all Face steals the last line of the movie - and it's THE line.
A good film, could have been done better, and def should have left out the bad bits.
Change BA for the second one.

Marina and the Diamonds
Though we really loved Pixie Victoria Lott and Little Boots with their blonde pop invasions, Marina is the best UK female artist to come along since Lily Allen.

It is true that we only know each other when we come up against our own limits.
But it's wrong too, because it isn't necessary to know everything about ourselves.
Human beings weren't made solely to go in search of wisdom, but also to plough the land, wait for rain, plant the wheat harvest the grain, make the bread.

6th Gate of Dreaming
In an experiment with a human observer, subatomic particles behave differently from the way they behave when the experiment is unobserved while in progress and the results are examined only after the fact.
This would indicate that, at least on a subatomic level, human will can shape reality.
Quantum Theory tells us that every point in the universe is connected to every other point, regardless of apparent distance.

But the brave put down their fears and go forward,
sometimes to death,
but always to victory.

Africa
Michael Jackson said that "Africa" by Toto was one of the most beautiful songs he had ever heard. We agree with him.
Despite our negative experiences of the "Dark Side" of Africa (and don't get us started on Idi Amin!) we post the lyrics to their song. This says what we really feel about that most unspoilt of lands.
I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
Shes coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, hurry boy, its waiting there for you
Chorus:
Its gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had
The wild dogs cry out in the night
As they grow restless longing for some solitary company
I know that I must do whats right
Sure as kilimanjaro rises like olympus above the serengeti
I seek to cure whats deep inside, frightened of this thing that Ive become
Hurry boy, shes waiting there for you
Its gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
Theres nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do

Rollercoaster
People get on a rollercoaster in search of excitement.
But once it starts, they are terrified and want it to stop.
What do they expect?
Having chosen adventure shouldn't they be prepared to go the whole way?
Or do they think the intelligent thing to do would be to avoid the ups and downs and spend all their time on a carousel, going round and round on the spot?

When you are next walking down the streets, take a look at all the people
Do you wonder if they chose their lives?
Or were they "chosen" by fate?
The housewife who dreamed of becoming a model.
The banker who wanted to be a musician.
The dentist who felt he should write a book and devote himself to literature.
The girl who would have loved to to a TV star, but who found herself instead working at the checkout in a supermarket.
(The convenience store clerk who wanted to be a veteranarian.)
In the search for happiness we are all equal.
None of us is happy - not the banker/musician, the checkout girl/actress, or the housewife/model.

Dreaming is very pleasant as long as you are not forced to put your dreams into practice.
That way we avoid all the risks, frustrations and difficulties.
And when we are old, we can always blame other people - preferably our parents, our spouses or our children - for our failure to realise our dreams.

Do you ever wonder how long it takes to change your life?
What measure of time is enough to be life altering?
Is it four years like school?
One year?
An eight week rock tour?
Can your life change in a month, or a week, or a single day?
We're always in a hurray to grow up, to go places, to get ahead.
And when you're young, one hour can change everything.

Have you ever wondered what marks our timing?
If one life can really make an impact on the world?
Or if the choices we make matter?
Sometimes in order to move forward, you have to go back.
In some cases, just a few minutes.

Do you ever wonder if we make the moments in our lives or if the moments in our lives make us?
If you could go back and change one thing about your life, would you?
And if you did, would that change make your life better?
Or would that change ultimately break your heart?
Or break the heart of another?
Or would you choose an entirely different path?
Or would you change just one thing, just one moment?
One moment, that you've always wanted back.
And if you did, would that change make your life better?

You can choose to blame your circumstances on fate or bad luck or bad choices.
Or you can fight back.
Things aren't always going to be fair in the real world.
That's just the way it is.
But for the most part, you get what you give.
The rest of your life is being shaped right now.
With the dreams you chase,
The choices you make,
and the person you decide to be.
The rest of your life is a long time.
And the rest of your life starts right now.

Regret
Regret comes in all shapes and sizes. Some are small like when we do a bad thing for a good reason. Some are bigger like when you let down a friend.
Some of us escape the pain of regret by making the right choice. Some of us have little time for regret because we're looking forward to the future. Sometimes we have to fight to come to terms with the past, and sometimes we bury our regret by promising to change our own ways.
But our biggest regrets are not for the things we did, but for the things we didn't do. Things we didn't say that could've save someone that we care about.

Much as some of us fight it,
Our parents have a mystical hold over us.
The power to affect our thoughts and emotions
The way only they can.
It's a bond that changes over time, but doesn't diminish,
Even if they are half a world away .....
....or in other world entirely.
It's a power we never fully understand.
We're left only to wonder that when our time comes
What kind of hold will we have on our children ?
Our parents have a mystical hold over us.
The power to affect our thoughts and emotions

Life comes at us from out of the darkness...
and at times we can struggle to find the courage to face it.
When life comes rushing at you from our of the darkness,
who will you choose to face it with?
Will it be someone you trust?
Will they be wise?
And will their love for you help them to guide you to the light?
Or will they lose their way in the darkness?
Will they make noble choices?
Or will that person be someone untested,
someone new?
Life comes rushing at you from out of the darkness,
when it does is there someone in your life you can count on?
Someone who will watch over you when you stumble and fall?
And in that moment, give you the strength to face your fears alone?

Katy Perry
After all the radio play and anticipation, Katy's vid for California Gurls has been released.
Now we've all been picturing a vid shot in Baywatch town, girls in "daisy dukes with bikinis on top", golden skin, on the beach, etc. So what did we get? A lame vid set in some Willy Wonka sweets and candy fantasy town.
However Katy redeems herself in the chorus by lying naked on a cloud while she sings - something you can't do on a California beach.
Check out the vid here:

P.S. You can't get it on You Tube.

Doctor Who
OK, we all miss David Tennant. But isn't Matt Smith doing well?
He hit the ground running kicking ass and taking names from day one and has made the role his own in a very short period of time, not an easy thing to do.
When The Doctor regenerates his personality is all over the place and it's like he's on an extended acid trip. Who can forget Peter Davidson's fifth Doctor in 1982 taking over from the manic Tom Baker and spending time in the Zero Room? - which got jettisoned from the Tardis and left him increasingly unstable.
The Matt Smith "11th" Doctor has a lot of David Tennant in there, but is also very Peter Davidson, the old man in the young man's body. The old man is of course, William Hartnell, and that has been referenced on more than one occassion in the series already.
Taking over from a popular established Doctor is aways tricky. Look at Colin Baker's 6th Doctor, considered by most to be the worst ever having taken over from Peter Davidson. He was forced to leave the show, replaced by Sylvester McCoy who did a good job with the role til the show was axed.
It wasn't really Colin's fault as he was the most aggressive and unpleasant Doctor ever, the most abrasive, having taken over from the pleasant and mild Peter Davidson. He wore the most outrageous outfit, even more than Tom Baker's scarf, and had the blandest assistants, having inherited the pretty but vacant Peri, and then the annoying and totally miscast Bonnie Langford (!)
Ace was a good assistant, but she was more Sylvester McCoy's than she was ever Baker II's.
As we're talking assistants, we have to say that Amy Pond is one of the best ever, and the best since Billie Piper as Rose Tyler (no disrepect to Martha and Katherine Tate, but these two stand out).

Vincent and The Doctor
We've been doing our TV catchup so finally got to see this episode - and what an episode it was - have seen it 3 times now.
We revisited the You Tube page and it has many new comments added, we recommend watching the slide show again and reading them:
Vincent
We have always liked seeing the Doctor meeting famous historical characters and this was one of the best.
It was also great seeing Vincent and Amy. I always wondered how Brittany Golightly would have been if she had gone back and met him - guess it would have been a lot like this.

Haiku
Haiku is a Japanese poem made up of 17 syllables in a 3 line 5-7-5 format.
Bassho broke with tradition in the amount of syllables on each line, though he always made 17.
We always found it suspect that when the Japanese poems are translated into English they are still exactly 17 syllables.
eg "I" in Japanese is "watashi", "you" is "anata" while "comorant" is "eu".
Doesn't add up, does it?
Or rather, it does, which is suspicious.

This haiku, after Bassho, is a death poem.
Try as he might the poet cannot get the 17 syllable haiku to work.
So, depressed, he pens a suicide note and then jumps into the water where he drowns.
The splash adds the 17th syllable, achieving in death what he failed to achieve in life.

Mila Kunis - Angelina Jolie
In the film of Gia, Mila Kunis plays the teenage Gia while a young Angelina Jolie plays Gia in her 20s.
Mila went on to play Jackie in That 70s Show where we first got to know and love her.
Since then everytime we watched Ang in Gia doing her naked thing, which we did often, we thought of that as the grown up Jackie.
Now Mila has grown up properly, and come out of the other side of her voice over career, she now looks just like a young grown up Angie.
Neither of them ever really looked like Gia.
